What is TruTV?

truTV is an American basic cable channel that is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. It first launched in 1991 as Court TV, a channel devoted to coverage of law and crime-related programming such as legal news, true crime documentaries, legal dramas, and live murder trials. In 2008, the channel rebranded to its current name and shifted its focus to reality shows, comedy, and programming aimed at a young adult audience.

Some of truTV's more popular shows include Impractical Jokers, a hidden-camera reality comedy featuring four friends daring each other to pull pranks on unsuspecting people; The Carbonaro Effect, a magic/prank show starring magician Michael Carbonaro; and Adam Ruins Everything, a comedic educational program in which host Adam Conover debunks common misconceptions. truTV also continues to air some court programming in the daytime hours.

While truTV's shift from purely legal/crime shows to more lighthearted reality fare has helped boost ratings and attract younger viewers, some have criticized the channel for moving too far away from its original concept as the premier destination for trial coverage and expert legal analysis. However, truTV remains one of the more widely available basic cable channels, reaching over 90 million households in the United States.
