A Windows PC TV tuner card for receiving and recording live TV broadcasts, with MPEG encoding and media center software integration.
WinTV is a line of TV tuner cards by Hauppauge Computer Works designed for the Windows platform. First introduced in 2001, WinTV allows receiving and recording live over-the-air analog or digital TV broadcasts on a Windows PC.
WinTV works by plugging a TV tuner card into a free PCI or PCI Express slot inside the computer. The card includes a built-in TV tuner to receive broadcast signals through a coaxial input, as well as hardware MPEG encoder to convert the video into MPEG format files readable by Windows Media Center or other compatible software.
Once installed, WinTV includes Windows desktop apps and integrates into Windows Media Center to browse channels, schedule recordings for broadcast programming, and watch live TV in a customizable interface. Recorded TV shows are saved as transport stream files that can be played back, edited, converted, and burned to DVD.
Different models of WinTV cards offer support for analog cable TV, clear QAM digital cable, ATSC over-the-air digital TV, FM radio tuning, and remote controls. More advanced cards also enable pausing live TV and streaming live or recorded shows over a home network.
