Assassin's Creed is an action-adventure stealth video game franchise created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond and Corey May, developed and published by Ubisoft using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives.
The series depicts a centuries-old struggle, now and then, between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction and characters, intertwined with real-world historical events and figures.
As of 2020, the series generally focuses on events set in the mid-to-late centuries of various civilizations, including the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, American Revolutionary War, French Revolution, Victorian England, Russian Revolution, and Ptolemaic Egypt. The series has experienced both high critical and commercial success, and has sold more than 155 million copies worldwide, becoming Ubisoft's best selling franchise.
The series took inspiration from the novel Alamut by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol, while building upon concepts from the Prince of Persia series.
