A free colorblind assistant app that uses augmented reality and computer vision algorithms to process camera feeds in real-time, overlaying colors with high contrast names and symbols.
C-Color is a free mobile app that assists people with color vision deficiencies in identifying colors more accurately. It uses augmented reality and advanced computer vision algorithms to process the live camera feed to detect colors, then overlays high contrast symbols and the color names in text to help colorblind users distinguish between similar shades.
The app works by showing the standard view from the camera first, then when turned on, it scans each part of the image to determine the dominant colors. It then overlays a circle with the color name spelled out in black and white block text, which stands out clearly against most colors. Inside the circle is also a distinct symbol representing that color, like a green tree icon on something detected as green. This provides two visual indicators to assist with identifying colors.
By combining augmented reality with real-time vision processing and accessibility features, C-Color allows colorblind users to better navigate through spaces with many multicolored objects like clothing stores, control panels, art supplies, and more. The symbols and text labels float over the items in the camera view, so users simply have to aim their smartphone camera at something to get an augmented overlay revealing the dominant colors detected in different parts of the scene.
