Business simulation and transport video game series with realistic city planning and management
Cities In Motion is a series of business simulation and transport video games developed by the Finnish indie game developer Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. The first game in the series, Cities in Motion, was released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows, with subsequent releases for OS X and Linux. It allows players to design, build and operate transportation networks in cities like Amsterdam, Berlin, Helsinki and Vienna.
The core gameplay involves designing efficient transportation systems by placing various transport lines, stations, stops and depots to move people around the city. Players need to balance finances, ensure smooth network operations, and respond to challenges like changing economic conditions, traffic jams, and accidents. The games have detailed city maps, vehicles, and passengers with simulated needs and behaviors.
Two sequels were released - Cities in Motion 2 in 2013, adding new features like multiplayer, day and night cycles, and modding support; and Cities: Skylines – Cities in Motion in 2021, which integrated the transport simulation features into the popular city-building game Cities: Skylines. Overall, the series offers sandbox-style, deeply immersive transportation management gameplay with appealing visuals and attention to urban detail.
