OpenTTD: Open Source Simulation Tycoon Game

Open source simulation and tycoon game where players transport goods and passengers by rail, road, air, and water, aiming to grow their transport company by building routes and infrastructure.

What is OpenTTD?

OpenTTD is an open source simulation and tycoon game based on the popular Microprose game Transport Tycoon Deluxe. In OpenTTD, players take on the role of a transport company owner, where the goal is to grow a successful transport business by transporting goods and passengers by rail, road, air and water.

The player starts in the year 1950 with just one vehicle. By building transport routes and infrastructure like railways, roads, airports and shipping ports/canals, players connect different industries, towns and cities together. This enables the flow of passengers and cargo, which in turn generates profit for the transport company. Profit can then be reinvested into ever larger and more advanced fleets of vehicles like trains, trucks, aircraft and ships. Over time, advanced technologies become available, allowing players to build more efficient vehicles and transport infrastructure.

OpenTTD has very detailed management and simulation. Players must manage finances, vehicle servicing schedules, cargo and passenger flows, transport infrastructure construction and more. Hundreds of vehicles can be active on a large and detailed transport network at any one time. The open ended and sandbox nature of the game provides huge replay value.

OpenTTD has very active modding and custom content creation community. Thousands of mods, custom vehicles, landscapes and more are available, greatly expanding the variety of transport scenarios possible.
