What is CityVille?
CityVille is an online social network game developed and published by Zynga in 2010. It is a city-building simulation in which the player takes on the role of mayor to develop a city from scratch. The core gameplay revolves around constructing buildings, producing goods, earning income, and keeping citizens happy.
When players first start CityVille, they begin with an empty plot of land and are given basic resources to construct some roads and buildings. As the city takes shape, players must balance commercial buildings like shops and offices with residential zones and decorations. Citizens will gradually move in as housing is developed. The bigger the population grows, the more tax income and resources players earn to invest back into expanding the city.
A key aspect of CityVille is keeping citizens happy and engaged. Players must provide amenities like fire and police stations, parks, landmarks, and entertainment buildings. Events and tasks are also provided for players to complete for bonuses. As players progress, they level up and unlock new buildings and items to further customize both the look and operation of their city.
Like other Zynga Facebook games of the era, CityVille incorporated a social element by allowing players to visit their friends' cities. They could also interact by trading resources and gifts. The game fueled itself on in-app purchases which players could use to accelerate their progress. At its peak shortly after launch, CityVille had over 100 million monthly players making it the largest Facebook game ever.
