Discover Dasher, an open-source predictive text entry system that enables fast and natural text input with continuous pointing gestures, predicting the intended text based on pattern drawing.
Dasher is an efficient text entry interface, driven by natural continuous pointing gestures. Dasher uses a probabilistic, adaptive language model to make text entry more efficient and frustration-free.
Dasher allows text entry by pointing the mouse, steering a dot to likely next letters. As letters are selected they appear at the top of the screen. Dasher learns from the text as it is written, improving predictions. Its interface uses zooming to deal with mis-hits and to reduce motion distance for frequently used letters. Experience shows expert users can enter text as fast as normal typing, but using only a simple pointing device.
Dasher provides an effective alternative text entry system wherever keyboard use is not possible, for example when driving cars. It also helps users with motor impairments access computer power without the requirement of sophisticated recognition systems. Dasher is free software released under the GNU GPL.
