Learn about Dawngate, a unique MOBA game with customizable loadouts and innovative team composition, discontinued in 2014.
Dawngate was a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was in development by Waystone Games. It was designed to take the proven MOBA formula of games like League of Legends and Dota 2 while innovating in areas of team composition and customization.
The map in Dawngate featured a unique two-lane design instead of the standard three lanes in most MOBAs. This put more focus on the jungle area and objectives between lanes. Dawngate also had an affinity system where players could customize their loadouts by selecting two affinities that shaped bonuses and abilities.
Each player had a unique Shaper that belonged to one of five Roles: Gladiators and Hunters were offense-focused carries, Tacticians provided support and control, Predators specialized in jungling, and Vanguards were resilient front-line tanks. Teams had to maintain Role diversity, emphasizing team strategy over individual performance.
Unfortunately, despite positive reception from fans in beta testing, Dawngate was canceled by Electronic Arts in 2014 before it could be officially launched. The game permanently shut down after a short open beta period of less than a year, ending Waystone Games as a studio. Dawngate showed promise in innovating the established MOBA formula but was unable to overcome the heavyweight competition already dominating the genre.
