FreeCol is an open-source turn-based strategy game based on the classic board game Colonization. In FreeCol, the player takes on the role of a colonial governor who is sent by their home country to explore, colonize, and develop the New World.
The game takes place on a map inspired by the Americas between 1400 and 1900 AD. As the colonial governor, the player must establish colonies, manage settlers, trade goods with Europe, engage in diplomacy with Native American tribes, and eventually fight for independence. Gameplay revolves around exploration, resource management, trade, and strategic decision making.
