What is Civilization?
Civilization is a seminal turn-based strategy video game series that allows players to guide a civilization from the dawn of humanity through to the space age and beyond. Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier for MicroProse in 1991, the Civilization series is considered one of the most influential strategy video game franchises of all time.
In a game of Civilization, the player takes on the role of a historical world leader as they build an empire across a procedurally-generated map representing the world. Starting with a lone settler unit and warrior in the ancient era, they will build up cities and infrastructure, research new technologies, collect resources, build wonders, negotiate with world leaders and wage war against opponents. The goal is to stand the test of time and build the greatest civilization that can overcome all challengers.
Core gameplay revolves around exploring the unknown map with scout units, founding new cities, improving those cities by building various districts and infrastructure, researching new technologies along branching tech trees that unlock new units, buildings and abilities, and competing with rival civilizations through trade, diplomacy, espionage, cultural influence and military conquest. Games can last hundreds of turns, taking civilizations from Small villages of the ancient era to sprawling futuristic metropolises.
Since the first game launched in 1991, the series has seen consistent critical and commercial success with each new iteration bringing refinements, enhancements and new concepts to the venerable franchise. With colorful graphics, intelligently-designed game mechanics and near-endless replayability on procedurally-generated maps and against countless AI opponents, it is often cited as one of the greatest strategy video game franchises in history.
