Players take the role of the ruler of civilizations such as Egypt, China, Rome, India, and Mesopotamia during the heights of their cultural, scientific, and political power.

Gameplay centers around managing domestic affairs by setting policies, appeasing factions, constructing new buildings, and allocating resources towards advances in areas like philosophy, mathematics, and warfare technology. Externally, players can send emissaries to other lands, engage in trade, go to war, and even attempt risky exploits like launching voyages into uncharted seas or funding risky scientific endeavors.
