What is GeneStudio?
GeneStudio is a free, open-source desktop application for molecular biology and genetics research. It provides a wide range of tools for DNA, RNA, and protein sequence analysis, including sequence alignment, motif finding, secondary structure prediction, phylogenetic tree building, 3D molecular modeling, and more.
Some key features of GeneStudio include:
- Sequence alignment using Clustal Omega, MUSCLE, MAFFT, and other popular algorithms
- Phylogenetic tree building tools such as PhyML, RAxML, MrBayes, and PhyloBayes
- Protein structure modeling via MODELLER and secondary structure prediction with PSIPRED
- A user-friendly graphical interface for designing workflows and visualizing results
- Support for standard file formats like FASTA, GenBank, PDB, etc.
- A plugin architecture for adding new tools and workflows
- Tools for primer design, restriction mapping, and other molecular biology applications
GeneStudio runs natively on Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows. All core tools are open-source and additional plugins can be installed from an online repository. An active user community provides support through forums and mailing lists.
SnapGene Viewer, Chromas, BioEdit, Serial Cloner, Geneious, DNASTAR Lasergene, Benchling, DNADynamo, PDRAW32, Ridom TraceEdi, DNAssist are some alternatives to GeneStudio.
