What is JAWS?

JAWS (Job Access With Speech) is a popular screen reader software developed by Freedom Scientific for computer users who are blind or have low vision. First released in 1989, JAWS has become one of the most widely used screen readers world-wide.

JAWS provides text-to-speech functionality that reads aloud text on the computer screen like documents, web pages, and user interface elements. It also includes keyboard shortcuts and hot keys to allow navigation and interaction without requiring use of a mouse. Other key features include Braille output via a refreshable Braille display and integrated support for mainstream applications like Microsoft Office.

By providing audible feedback combined visual impairment assistance features, JAWS enables blind and low vision individuals to access computer systems for purposes like work, education, internet use, and more. Regular updates over more than 30 years of development have ensured continued compatibility as new operating systems and applications are released.

While primarily intended for blind users, JAWS can also assist those with learning disabilities, limited mobility, or other impairments that make reading text on a monitor difficult. Its widespread adoption has helped make computer and internet use more accessible for the vision impaired community.
