Discover the popular single-player matching tile game, Mahjong Solitaire. Learn how to match pairs of similar Mahjong tiles and remove them from the game board, until all tiles have been matched.
Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile matching game that uses a set of Mahjong tiles. The standard goal of the game is to match all pairs of identical tiles and remove them from the board, leaving the board empty.
At the start of a Mahjong Solitaire game, the 144 tiles will be arranged randomly across the game board in intricate patterns. Tiles are removed when you match two free tiles that have identical faces. The tiles must either be free on the left/right or on the top. A tile that is blocked in on all sides cannot be removed until other tiles free it.
As you clear matching pairs, you open up space on the game board, allowing previously trapped tiles to become movable. The game ends when all 144 Mahjong tiles have been matched and removed from the board. If the tiles become shuffled to a state where no further matches can be made, you lose that round.
The layouts and tile matching mechanic of Mahjong Solitaire make it a highly popular casual online and mobile game. It involves some degree of spatial reasoning to identify matching tiles while planning chains of moves to clear the board.
