Mari0 is a fan-made freeware video game developed by Maurice Guégan and released in 2012. It combines elements from Nintendo's classic Super Mario Bros game with the popular Portal puzzle-platformer series created by Valve.
In Mari0, players control Mario as he runs, jumps, and shoots through levels filled with puzzles, enemies, and obstacles. However, Mario now has access to a portal gun, allowing him to create linked portals on walls, floors, and ceilings to reach new areas and solve complex tests.
The core gameplay will be familiar to fans of the original 2D Super Mario Bros games on NES and SNES. You run from left to right across platforms, landing on enemies to defeat them while avoiding hazards like lethal drops and barrages of bullets. However, using your portal gun's orange and blue portals opens up many additional navigation options.
By connecting a portal to another surface in the level, Mario can launch himself across large gaps, access high platforms and secret areas, bypass threats by instantly warping through barriers, and much more. The innovative integration of portal gameplay with Mario's iconic run-and-jump antics creates totally new puzzle-solving and speedrun possibilities.
