Matches take place on symmetrical maps that have lanes connecting the bases. Fighters have unique abilities and attributes, and collect experience points to level up and become more powerful over the course of a match. By destroying computer-controlled units and opposing fighters, players earn gold which can be used to purchase in-game items and gear to augment their fighter's stats.

There are various game modes in Planet Fights, but the most popular is the 5v5 match format where two teams compete to destroy each other's base. Teams have to balance attacking the enemy base while also defending their own. Map objectives like powerful buffs also come into play.

With a roster of over 100 fighters to choose from, numerous viable strategies and playstyles emerge. Teams have to coordinate and leverage their fighter selections and item builds to create strong team compositions. Elements of skill, strategy, teamwork and competition come together to create compelling gameplay.
