Project Sandcastle: Reborn Mobile Devices with Android

Project Sandcastle is an open source app that allows you to install Android on certain mobile devices that originally ran other operating systems. It gives new life to older phones by letting you use Android instead.

What is Project Sandcastle?

Project Sandcastle is an open source application that allows you to install Android on mobile devices that were not originally designed to run it. It exploits vulnerabilities in a device's bootloader to gain access and install a specially customized version of Android.

The goal of Project Sandcastle is to extend the usable lifespan of older phones by giving them the ability to run Android. This can breathe new life into devices that are no longer supported by their original operating system. It also allows Android fans to install their preferred mobile OS on non-Android hardware.

To use Project Sandcastle, you'll need a compatible phone with an unlockable bootloader and custom recovery support. The list of supported devices includes older iPhones, Lumias, and other smartphones that were originally designed to run iOS, Windows 10 Mobile, or other operating systems. Once installed, users gain access to the Play Store and other standard Android features.

As an open source project maintained by developers and enthusiasts, Project Sandcastle is continuously adding support for new devices. However, because it exploits low-level functionality of devices, there is a higher risk of something going wrong during installation. But for those willing to experiment, it provides an interesting way to reuse discontinued phones.
