In the games, the player creates a heroic adventurer who travels to different lands completing quests and helping people while advancing their own abilities and uncovering an overarching story. Lands include things like forests, deserts, mountains, and valleys, each with their own myths and monsters.

Gameplay involves a mix of adventure game style puzzle solving and inventory management along with RPG combat, skill use, and character statistic management. The games pioneer a genre sometimes called "adventure-RPGs".
