Quibi: Short-Form Mobile Video Platform

Short-form mobile video platform featuring 10-minute episodes, launched in 2020, shutting down operations due to subscriber struggles.

What is Quibi?

Quibi was a short-form mobile video platform service that launched in April 2020. It was founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman with the goal of creating a new entertainment platform for premium short-form video content designed specifically for viewing on smartphones.

The key features of Quibi included:

  • Episodes and videos that were 10 minutes or less in length
  • Designed for smartphone and mobile viewing with both horizontal and vertical formats
  • High production value content from major Hollywood studios and producers
  • Cost $4.99 per month for an ad-supported subscription or $7.99 per month for an ad-free subscription

Quibi lined up many top-tier creative partners from Hollywood and invested heavily in original programming featuring stars like Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Jennifer Lopez and LeBron James. It launched with over 50 original shows and new episodes were added daily.

However, Quibi struggled to gain subscribers in its first year. Several factors contributed to its lack of adoption, including the high subscription cost, lack of support on TV screens, and launching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Quibi announced it would shut down operations in October 2020, only 6 months after launch.
