What is River City Girls?

River City Girls is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game developed by WayForward and published by Arc System Works in 2019. It is a spin-off entry in the long-running Kunio-kun series, best known for River City Ransom.

Players control Misako and Kyoko, the girlfriends of series mainstays Kunio and Riki. When the boys disappear, the girls take to the streets of River City to search for them, battling waves of rival gang members using an arsenal of punches, kicks, grapples, weapons, and items along the way.

The gameplay follows in the tradition of classic beat 'em ups like Double Dragon and Final Fight, with two players able to play cooperatively either locally or online. There is also an RPG-inspired leveling system, shops to upgrade abilities, side quests and minigames, and unlockable playable characters from the Kunio-kun series.

River City Girls received positive reviews for its sprite animation visuals, catchy soundtrack, beat 'em up action gameplay, humor, and character customization options. Critics noted it as a modern standout in the beat 'em up genre. An upcoming sequel, River City Girls 2, is planned for release in 2022.
