What is Sea of Thieves?

Sea of Thieves is an action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios as an Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive. The game allows players to take on the role of pirates sailing the open seas of a fantastical world either solo or as part of a crew of up to four players.

In Sea of Thieves, players explore an expansive ocean filled with other crews of players and populated with islands. The game has vibrant, cartoonish visuals and emphasizes both cooperation and competition as players complete voyages, search for treasure, engage in ship-to-ship battles, form alliances with some crews and attack others, and more. There is no set path or final goal, giving players the freedom to approach the game however they choose.

Core gameplay revolves around sailing on a variety of ships, from small sloops designed for solo or duo sailors up to towering galleons manned by a four-player crew. Players must manage sailing, lowering and raising anchors, adjusting sails, patching holes, bailing water, and more to successfully navigate the seas. Voyages offered by trading companies provide different objectives like finding buried treasure, transporting valuable merchant cargo, or capturing souls. Successfully completing voyages and battles earns gold and reputation which allows players to purchase cosmetic items.

While Sea of Thieves can be played solo, its focus is on multiplayer gameplay and the interactions between crews. It encourages both cooperation between crews with mission alliances and fun rivalries. Major content updates have added new locations, enemies, missions, mechanics, and in-game events as well.
