What is Shovel Knight?

Shovel Knight is an action-adventure platform game developed and published by Yacht Club Games. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo 3DS in June 2014, with ports for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox One and Linux following in 2015. The game is inspired by gameplay and graphics of platformers for the Nintendo Entertainment System, particularly those produced by Capcom and Konami in the late 1980s such as Mega Man, Castlevania and DuckTales.

In Shovel Knight, players control the eponymous protagonist as he collects treasure and battles against the Order of No Quarter, an evil group of knights led by the Enchantress, to rescue his partner Shield Knight. Gameplay resembles games like Mega Man and DuckTales, using mechanics such as pogo jumping on enemies and their heads to bounce upwards, as well as obtaining powers from special objects and block breaking. The game is composed of numerous levels that can be played out of order if certain conditions are met.

The game features multiplayer co-op and versus modes. It also features challenge stages and amiibo support. Two free expansions were released as updates in 2015 and 2020, adding new campaigns and gender swap modes.
