What is Sniper Elite (Series)?

The Sniper Elite series is a tactical third-person shooter franchise set primarily during World War II. The games emphasize stealth sniping tactics, requiring players to carefully plan their approach to avoid detection and take out enemies with skillfully-placed long-range rifle shots.

The first game in the series, Sniper Elite, was released in 2005 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows. It follows American OSS sniper Karl Fairburne on missions against Nazi forces in Berlin near the end of WWII. Gameplay involves stealthily navigating environments to find an ideal sniping position, then using the rifle's scope and environmental factors like wind to take accurate shots from afar.

Sniper Elite V2 from 2012 and Sniper Elite 3 in 2014 built upon the original's formula with improved graphics, expanded arsenal of authentic WWII weapons, larger sandbox-style levels, and gory slow-motion X-Ray kill camera showcasing the bullet's path. Sniper Elite 4 in 2017 added even bigger open world environments and more tactical options. The series has received praise for its sniping mechanics and historical setting.

There have also been several spin-off games featuring the series' signature long-distance takedown mechanics in different contexts, including Zombie Army trilogy against the supernatural, and Sniper Elite VR bringing the experience to virtual reality. The franchise continues to be popular for offering methodical, accuracy-focused sniping action.
