What is Space Pirates and Zombies?

Space Pirates and Zombies (SPAZ) is a top-down space exploration and combat game developed and published by MinMax Games. Players take control of a customizable spaceship and are let loose in a procedurally generated galaxy with the goal of building up a fleet, looting cargo, and battling zombies and rival space pirates.

Gameplay consists of flying from solar system to solar system, mining asteroids for resources, trading goods at space stations, completing story-based missions, and getting into ship-to-ship battles. As players progress, they can upgrade their ship with new weapons and technology, recruit ally ships to join their fleet, and increase their notoriety as an infamous space captain.

A key feature of SPAZ is its zombie-infested setting. Much of the galaxy has been overrun by a zombie virus that has infected humans and aliens alike. Taking out zombie infestations and discovering the cause of the plague is a central focus of the game's plot and missions. The zombie threat also leads to emergent skirmishes where neutral factions may call on the player for assistance.

With its retro vector graphics, ambient space soundtrack, and emphasis on open-ended space exploration, SPAZ aims to evoke a nostalgic yet modern take on classic space trader/combat games like Star Control.
