A free, open source game like Escape Velocity series, featuring procedurally generated galaxies, customizable ships and storylines with multiple endings.
Endless Sky is an open source, 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series published by Ambrosia Software in the early 2000s. Much like EV Nova, Endless Sky features procedurally generated galaxies populated by several alien factions, each with their own economies, ships, outfits, and stories to discover.
As a spaceship captain in Endless Sky, you start out with a basic shuttle and aim to make a name for yourself through trading, missions, bounty hunting and mercenary work for various factions. You can upgrade and customize your ship with new weapons, shields, and other modules bought at space stations across different star systems. The game features an open narrative with multiple story arcs and endings based on your choices and allegiances.
While the core gameplay focuses on space travel, combat, and economics, the lore and writing create an immersive universe with mystery and political intrigue between warring factions like the Deep Sky Ranger militias and the ruthless Pug warships. With procedural generation, each new game offers a different experience across a vast, explorable galaxy.
As an open source project, Endless Sky is entirely free while providing many hours of old-school space adventure. Its open-ended nature and customization options encourage replayability and creativity when forging your path through the stars.
