What is VirtuaNES?
VirtuaNES is a high performance Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator for Windows and Linux operating systems developed by Nicola Salmoria. It allows users to play classic 8-bit NES games on modern personal computers by emulating original NES hardware including the CPU, graphics card, memory, sound card and input devices. VirtuaNES is completely free and open source and compatible with nearly any modern Windows or Linux machine.
VirtuaNES aims to provide very accurate emulation of the original NES hardware which aids in compatibility with a wide library of NES game titles. However, it still offers modern conveniences such as save and load states which allow the progress in a game to be quickly saved or reloaded. Input devices can also be configured in VirtuaNES to allow use of USB gamepads or keyboard mappings tailored to a user's preference.
VirtuaNES provides an intuitive graphical interface for setting up and loading ROM images of NES games. It is an excellent and well supported emulator that faithfully recreates the 8-bit NES experience on any Windows or Linux machine with a reasonable amount of processing power.
