What is Webtrees?

webtrees is an open source web-based genealogy application used to track family histories and build family trees. It is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database backend to store all the genealogical data. webtrees allows users to:

  • Create detailed profiles for individuals with information like names, vital details, events, relationships
  • Build out a family tree showing the connections between relatives
  • Source information by citing documents and repositories as evidence for facts
  • Attach photos, documents and other media to individuals and families
  • Analyze their tree with built-in charts and statistics
  • Collaboratively build family trees by connecting with relatives also using webtrees
  • Share all or parts of their tree by publishing dynamic websites
  • Handle complex family relationships like adoptions, same-sex marriages etc.
