What is Wisdom Tree?
Wisdom Tree was an American video game developer and publisher that operated from 1991 to 1993. They were known for creating unauthorized Christian-themed video games for popular home video game consoles of the time like the NES and Sega Genesis.
Since Nintendo and Sega had licensing restrictions that prohibited religious or Christian content, Wisdom Tree found ways to develop and release cartridges that would run on those systems without official approval. Their games featured Biblical stories, themes, and characters.
Some of Wisdom Tree's most well-known NES titles included Bible Adventures, Exodus, and King of Kings. Their Genesis games featured Bible themes like Noah's Ark and Joshua.
While novel in concept, Wisdom Tree games were not well-received critically. They were criticized for subpar graphics, gameplay, and for feeling like religious propaganda. Wisdom Tree ceased game development in 1993.
Wisdom Tree exposed gaps in Nintendo and Sega's licensing models at the time. Their unauthorized religious games were an intriguing curiosity when they hit the market in the early 1990s.
