What is Commandos (Series)?

Commandos is a series of real-time tactics video games developed by Pyro Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. The games follow the adventures of a fictional British commando unit during World War II as they infiltrate enemy territories and complete various missions.

The Commandos games are notable for incorporating challenging aspects of stealth, recon, and sabotage. Players take control of a group of Allied operatives with expertise in different fields such as espionage, weapons, and explosives. Missions involve silently sneaking into enemy bases, gathering intelligence, pilfering documents, sabotaging infrastructure, and assassinating high-value targets.

Gameplay takes place from a birds-eye view in expansive 3D environments. Levels are essentially enormous puzzles that require strategically using the unique skillset of each playable commando to overcome obstacles and avoid detection. The games received very positive critical reception and sold over 6 million units worldwide.

The series includes the original Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines released in 1998 and followed by three sequels - Commandos 2: Men of Courage in 2001, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin in 2003, and Commandos: Strike Force in 2006. The latter switched to a first-person shooter format. The franchise inspired the Desperados series which uses a similar setting and concept but with a Wild West theme.
