What is Dexed?

Dexed is an open source FM synthesizer software plugin that emulates the iconic Yamaha DX7 hardware synthesizer from the 1980s. Developed by Digital Suburban, Dexed accurately replicates the DX7's 6-operator FM digital synthesis engine and includes over 144 preset sounds from the original DX7.

As an emulation of the DX7, Dexed allows for the creation and manipulation of complex sounds using frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. Its 6 operators give extensive control over modulating oscillators to sculpt a wide array of tonal possibilities. The interface resembles the original DX7, making it familiar to use for those who have worked with the hardware.

Going beyond the original capabilities, Dexed also features an arpeggiator, effects like chorus and reverb, and deeper modulation control. The plugin can read native DX7 patch files, covering the entire library of vintage DX sounds. As an open source project, Dexed is also continuously improved and updated by its active development community.
