What is ESPN?
ESPN (originally an acronym for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) is an American multinational basic cable sports channel owned by ESPN Inc., owned jointly by The Walt Disney Company (80%) and Hearst Communications (20%). It primarily broadcasts sports-related content including live and recorded event telecasts, sports news programming, sports talk shows, and other original programming.
ESPN broadcasts primarily from its studios in Bristol, Connecticut and Los Angeles, California. It operates regional offices across the United States and around the world. ESPN headquarters are in Bristol from which remote broadcasts of games and studio shows take place. Event telecasts are mostly produced from game venues by showing footage obtained through satellite uplinks, production trucks, chartered flights to cover teams in specific markets, and media shuttles.
ESPN covers Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League (NFL), Major League Soccer, the National Hockey League, NCAA college football, baseball and basketball, tennis, golf, auto racing, boxing, mixed martial arts, Olympic sports, high school sports, the X Games, World Cup soccer, and professional wrestling. Original programming includes SportsCenter, various sports debate and talk shows, and multiple sports documentary series and films from the ESPN Films brand.
In addition to sports coverage, ESPN also airs entertainment shows focused on sports and pop culture, including documentary series and reality shows. It operates regional channels specific to local markets across the United States. ESPN is also available via streaming through the ESPN App and WatchESPN platforms, as well as distribution through traditional cable and satellite providers.
