iDRAC: Manage Dell Servers Remotely
Remote management software for Dell servers, allowing IT administrators to monitor, control and configure via web interface or command line tools
What is IDRAC?
iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) is Dell's proprietary hardware and software remote access solution integrated into their PowerEdge servers and other select Dell products. iDRAC provides out-of-band management capabilities that allow IT administrators to remotely monitor, troubleshoot, configure and maintain Dell servers independent of the operating system status.
Key features and capabilities of iDRAC include:
- Remote power control - Power servers on/off remotely
- Console access - Access server console for troubleshooting without attaching peripherals
- Hardware monitoring - Monitor CPU, memory, storage, fans, temperatures etc.
- Hardware configuration - Configure BIOS and certain components
- Alerting - Automatic alerts for hardware failures/warnings
- Role-based authority control - Limit administrative access
- Automation - Automate tasks using scripts, Redfish APIs etc.
Having an iDRAC allows administrators to perform management tasks even if the server OS is offline or malfunctioning. It improves uptime and efficiency. Most Dell servers come with iDRAC built-in while some require add-on cards to enable it. There are different tiers (Express, Enterprise etc) offering varying levels of functionality.
