MP3Gain: Open-Source Audio Normalization Tool

MP3Gain adjusts MP3 file volume for uniform loudness, preserving dynamic range without distortion.

What is MP3Gain?

MP3Gain is a free and open-source volume normalization program for MP3 audio files. It was created to adjust the playback volume of MP3s so that all songs in a music collection play at the same loudness level.

MP3Gain scans an MP3 file to detect its perceived loudness level based on psychoacoustic models of human hearing. It then calculates the amount of adjustment needed in decibels to reach a target loudness such as 89 or 95 dB. The actual audio data within the MP3 remains unchanged - MP3Gain simply tags the file with volume gain information to guide playback software.

This approach avoids deterioration in sound quality from traditional volume normalization methods that perform amplitude adjustments to the audio signal. MP3 playback software that supports replaygain reads this tagged data to dynamically apply volume adjustments during playback. This ensures consistent volume across files and albums without distorting dynamic range.

As an open-source tool, MP3Gain is free to use across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. It integrates with popular audio players through its replaygain support. Key features include batch processing of MP3 files, custom loudness target levels, and the ability to undo changes by resetting replaygain tags.
