Action-packed adventure game set in feudal Japan, featuring challenging combat, loot collection, and RPG character progression.
Nioh is an action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. It was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017, and later ported to Microsoft Windows in 2017 and PlayStation 5 in 2021. The game is set in a fictionalized version of early 17th century Japan during a massive civil war. The player takes on the role of William, an Irish sailor who finds himself embroiled in the conflict after washing ashore in Japan and being granted supernatural abilities. William becomes a samurai and ally of historical figure Hattori Hanzo as he fights against human enemies like bandits and soldiers as well as hostile Yokai supernatural monsters from Japanese folklore.
Gameplay in Nioh focuses on fast-paced and challenging combat. William must fight groups of enemies using a variety of melee weapons like swords, spears, axes, and polearms, as well as ranged weapons like bows, rifles, and hand cannons. The player can target individual limbs on enemies to disable attacks or go for killing blows. Defeating enemies earns the player loot and experience points to level up William, unlocking new skills and abilities. Nioh incorporates role-playing game elements like skill trees, equipment upgrades and crafting complex systems of stamina management and Ki Pulse to regain stamina. Levels are long, multi-part affairs based on different regions of historical Japan featuring human and yokai opponents along with massive boss monsters like giant serpents and one-eyed demons.
Nioh received positive reviews, with critics praising the game's rewarding combat system and challenge. Many compared the gameplay to the popular Dark Souls series. DLC expansions added new story content and gear for players to acquire. Two major sequels, Nioh 2 and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty have also been announced to build on the gameplay foundation of the original Nioh.
