Turn-based RPG with 7 worlds to explore, featuring a unique storyline and characters, developed by Valkyrie Studios in 1999.
Septerra Core is a turn-based role-playing video game developed by Valkyrie Studios and published by Monolith Productions in 1999. The game takes place on Septerra, a world consisting of seven layers or 'shells', each containing its own distinct culture and civilization. The player takes control of a young woman named Maya who begins the game living on the outer shell of Chosen.
When the shell's reactor begins to fail, Maya finds herself traveling to each shell in an effort to reach the core and prevent the destruction of her world. She gains a party of companions along the way, each with their own skills and special abilities in combat. Battles take place in a turn-based format, with characters able to attack, use skills, cast magic, or use items.
Septerra Core features pre-rendered backgrounds and environments in a style reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII. Its overall steampunk aesthetic combined with its exploration of distinct societies on each shell world were considered innovative concepts at the time. While initially overlooked, the game later gathered a dedicated cult following for its story, characters, and unique world.
