Discover the Wasteland series, a classic post-apocalyptic video game franchise developed by inXile Entertainment, featuring futuristic desert landscapes and nuclear war aftermaths.
Wasteland is a post-apocalyptic computer role-playing game that was originally released in 1988. It was developed by Interplay Productions for Commodore 64, Apple II, and MS-DOS. The game is set in a futuristic, desert landscape after a nuclear war between the United States and Soviet Union in the late 1990s destroyed much of human civilization.
Players control a party of Desert Rangers and complete a main quest to defeat the survivalist Army of the High-Priest Vizier running a fascist state in Arizona. Wasteland features a gritty atmosphere and nonlinear gameplay focused on problem-solving and tactical combat. It was one of the inspirations for the popular Fallout series and helped define the post-apocalyptic RPG genre.
Wasteland was critically acclaimed upon release for its innovative design and moral ambiguity. It went on to sell over 100,000 copies, making it one of the best-selling non-licensed computer RPGs of the 1980s. Over 20 years later, inXile Entertainment, founded by Interplay's Brian Fargo, acquired the rights for Wasteland and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to develop a sequel, Wasteland 2, released in 2014. Two more sequels, Wasteland 3 and Wasteland 4, are currently in development.
