Free, open source software for verifying file integrity using checksum files, scans folders and compares file checksums to SFV files
SFV Checker is a free, open source utility program used to verify the integrity of files using checksums. It works by comparing checksums of files against SFV (Simple File Verification) files that contain a list of file names and their associated CRC-32 checksum values.
To use SFV Checker, you first create an SFV file for a folder containing your files. SFV Checker scans the folder and generates checksum values for each file, outputting them into an SFV file. You keep this SFV file to verify the folder later.
To check the integrity, you use SFV Checker to scan the folder again and compare the new checksum values against the original SFV file. If any files differ, SFV Checker reports them as BAD, indicating the file has been modified or corrupted since the SFV was created.
SFV Checker is often used to ensure proper downloading of files from the internet, such as software installers and disc images. It provides a way to easily verify files have not been tampered with or corrupted during download. As an open source tool, SFV Checker runs on Windows, Linux and macOS.
