SpellForce combines elements of RTS and RPG genres, featuring a hero progression system and story-driven single-player campaign along with multiplayer modes.
SpellForce is a series of fantasy real-time strategy / role-playing video games developed by German studio Phenomic Game Development and currently published by THQ Nordic. The first SpellForce game was released in 2003 for Windows PC.
The defining feature of the SpellForce games is the seamless combination of RTS and RPG genres. Players control heroes that gain experience levels and skills while commanding armies and constructing bases in a real-time strategy format. The single-player campaigns feature lengthy story-driven scenarios with role-playing mechanics.
Key gameplay elements include resource gathering, base building, army unit recruitment and hero progression typical of RTS titles, along with skill trees, quests, NPC interaction and loot collection associated with RPGs. Multiplayer modes allow players to play competitively or cooperatively against computer or human opponents.
There are currently three main entries in the series - SpellForce: The Order of Dawn (2003), SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars (2006) and SpellForce 3 (2017), along with various expansion packs. The games garnered positive reviews, praised for successfully blending the two distinct genres. The series has a dedicated fanbase, drawn to its fantasy setting and hybrid gameplay.
