What is SRSRoot?
SRSRoot is an open-source password recovery and auditing tool for Windows operating systems. It allows system administrators and IT security professionals to reset forgotten passwords, recover password hashes, unlock locked accounts, enable/disable accounts, list users, view account metadata, enable/disable Windows features, and audit Windows systems.
SRSRoot works by booting the target Windows system from a CD or USB drive into a Linux-based environment. This allows bypassing normal Windows authentication and gaining access at the system level. Once booted, SRSRoot provides a graphical user interface and command line tools to perform various password resetting and auditing tasks.
Key features of SRSRoot include:
- Reset local user account passwords and unlock locked accounts
- Recover and decrypt LM and NTLM password hashes
- Enable/disable local user accounts
- List detailed user account information
- Audit Windows features like remote desktop, SSH, HTTP, etc.
- Enable/disable Windows features
- supports Windows 2000 through Windows 10
As an open-source tool, SRSRoot benefits from continual updates and improvements from its active development community. It can be a valuable tool for both individual users who have forgotten a password and professional system administrators performing security audits and forensics.
