What is The Flame in the Flood?

The Flame in the Flood is a rogue-lite survival action video game developed by The Molasses Flood and published by Curve Digital. It was released in 2016 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

In The Flame in the Flood, the player takes on the role of a wanderer named Scout and their dog named Aesop as they travel down a procedurally-generated river, scavenging materials to craft items while attempting to outrun the dangers of the wilderness. Resources like clean water, food, medicine, weapons and warmth are scarce. Players must carefully manage their resources, health, hunger and warmth as they use the river to their advantage, stopping at randomly generated locations to scavenge for supplies or hunt wild animals.

The river is endless and each location presents new dangers. Players must choose whether to stop and search locations for useful items or push further downstream. Every decision comes at a cost. Contend with deadly rapids while rafting during the day, but also look for for places to dock along the way -dilapidated towns, odds-and-ends camps, even an abandoned rail car. Scout can then search these locations for precious resources that may help her survive another day.

But she’s not entirely alone in her journey through the wilderness. Scout’s faithful companion Aesop the dog can aid in her survival. His keen senses point out invisible dangers like lurking predators, while also sniffing out hidden caches of items. Aesop can also help Scout take down wild animals during hunts.

Overcome hunger, illness, and the elements while balancing your resources. Decide whether to spend that last scrap of food to save Aesop’s life, or keep it for yourself in hopes of surviving longer. Strategically explore the best path downstream, grab what supplies you can, craft items when needed, and persevere to live another day. With randomly generated worlds, locations, supplies and potential dangers, no two journeys are the same.
