An open-source BIOS extension adding IDE/ATA hard drive support to computers lacking native IDE support, enabling use of high-capacity IDE hard drives with older systems.
XTIDE Universal BIOS is an open-source BIOS extension designed to add native Integrated Drive Electronics/Advanced Technology Attachment (IDE/ATA) hard disk drive (HDD) support to personal computers that lack built-in IDE support. It works by providing low-level access to ATA/IDE commands through the computer's BIOS interface.
The software was created to allow using modern, high-capacity IDE hard drives with older DOS-based systems like the IBM PC or compatible computers that predate the introduction of the IDE interface in 1994. Without XTIDE, such vintage computers can typically only handle hard drives up to 528 MB in size.
As an open-source project provided free of charge, XTIDE Universal BIOS helps breathe new life into retro PCs and expand their storage capabilities immensely. It simplifies configuring IDE drives by autodetecting parameters. The software supports a wide array of IDE drives with capacities up to 128 GB.
XTIDE Universal BIOS consists of a ROM chip that gets flashed into the system's BIOS along with optional diskette-based utilities for drive configuration. As it intercepts IDE/ATA access in the BIOS at a low level, the extension works transparently without need for special drivers in DOS or other retro operating systems.
