Cardano

Cardano is an open-source, decentralized, public blockchain and cryptocurrency project. It aims to operate a smart contract platform providing advanced features including scalability, interoperability, and sustainability.

What is Cardano?

Cardano is an open-source, decentralized public blockchain and cryptocurrency project that started in 2015. It was founded by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson and built through academic rigor and peer-reviewed research by scientists and engineers around the world.

The Cardano blockchain operates the Ada cryptocurrency and is designed to be scalable, interoperable, and sustainable. It uses a proof-of-stake consensus protocol called Ouroboros which allows it to operate securely while using less energy than older proof-of-work blockchains.

Some key features and goals of Cardano include:

  • Advanced smart contract platform capabilities
  • Ability to scale to millions of users
  • Interoperability with other blockchains
  • Secure, decentralized, and open infrastructure
  • Sustainability and long-term viability using proof-of-stake
  • Governance through community participation

The Cardano roadmap includes delivering capabilities in eras: Byron for foundation, Shelley for decentralization and proof-of-stake, Goguen for smart contracts, Basho for performance improvements, and Voltaire for governance.
