Half-Life mod turned standalone game, featuring psychological horror and a dark conspiracy, now available on Steam
Cry of Fear is a psychological horror game that was originally released in 2012 as a mod for Half-Life. It was later updated and released in 2013 as a standalone game on Steam. The game was developed over the course of 7 years by Team Psykskallar, a small independent Swedish development team.
In Cry of Fear, you play as Simon Henriksson, a young man who wakes up in an alley after getting hit by a car while riding his bike. Still injured, Simon tries to make his way home, only to find his neighborhood abandoned and dangerous creatures roaming the streets.
As you progress through the game, you uncover notes and messages that suggest a larger conspiracy involving a doctor who had been treating Simon prior to the accident. The story delves into themes of anxiety, depression, and the horrors of losing your sanity as Simon struggles to differentiate reality from delusion.
From a gameplay perspective, Cry of Fear employs classic survival horror mechanics. Ammo and health items are scarce, encouraging cautious exploration and strategic resource management. Combat is frantic yet clunky, with enemies that can easily overwhelm an unprepared player. Puzzles and environmental storytelling round out the experience.
Visually, Cry of Fear makes excellent use of its Half-Life roots. The environments are impressively detailed and atmospheric, with game's gritty industrial setting helping establish an ominous, unsettling mood. The monster designs also contain genuinely horrifying and grotesque imagery.
While understandably rough around the edges given its indie origins, Cry of Fear nonetheless delivers a compelling, frightening, and narratively ambitious horror experience that's well worth playing for fans of classic survival horror.
