What is Silent Hill (Series)?
The Silent Hill series is a franchise of survival horror video games developed and published by Konami. The first game was released in 1999 for the PlayStation to critical and commercial success. Silent Hill quickly became known for its disturbing psychological horror atmosphere, intricate storytelling, and use of symbolism.
In the games, players control ordinary characters who are somehow drawn into the mysterious and haunted small town of Silent Hill. As they explore the abandoned streets and foggy environs, they encounter uncanny creatures and ghosts, as well as disturbing sights and sounds. Each game tends to follow a different protagonist, with the exception of Silent Hill 2 protagonist James Sunderland who returns in later games.
A signature feature of the Silent Hill games is the Otherworld - an alternate hellish reality that the town shifts to. This is when the fog lifts and the full horror is revealed. The transitions between the foggy deserted town and the industrial Otherworld are a marked feature of the series.
While the earlier Silent Hill games retain more traditional survival horror and puzzle elements, the later games incorporate psychological horror, occult rituals, and more actionized combat. Themes of crime, punishment, and guilt also figure prominently across the series. Silent Hill 2 in particular is considered one of the greatest and most artistic horror games ever made.
To date there have been over a dozen Silent Hill games released, including spin-offs like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for Wii and the Silent Hill: Book of Memories game for PS Vita. The franchise also spawned two feature films in 2006 and 2012. While series sales have declined in recent years, the early Silent Hill games remain iconic examples of narrative and atmosphere-focused horror gaming.
