What is Desperados (Series)?

Desperados is a popular series of real-time tactical strategy games developed by Spellbound Entertainment and published by THQ Nordic. The first game in the series, Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, was released in 2001 and introduced players to gunslinger John Cooper and his band of outlaws.

The Desperados games are set in the Wild West era of American history during the later half of the 19th century. The story-driven games put players in command of Cooper and up to five other unique playable characters, each with their own special abilities. Missions involve using tactics, stealth and combat to achieve objectives within hostile enemy territories.

Gameplay consists of controlling characters in isometric 3D environments. Players can use various weapons and abilities to sneak past enemies or take them out. Non-player characters can also be interacted with. The games feature a real-time tactical pause system, allowing players time to coordinate attacks and plan strategies. An emphasis is placed on stealth over direct combat.

The series has received positive critical reception over the years for its tactical depth, characters, story and genre setting. After the first game's success, Spellbound Entertainment developed a prequel titled Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge in 2006. In 2020, THQ Nordic published a third entry called Desperados III, developed by Mimimi Games. The series remains popular for its tactical Wild West gameplay style.
