Real-time strategy video game set in space, featuring diverse planets to colonize and intense space battles
Haegemonia Legions of Iron is a real-time strategy and space combat video game developed by Digital Reality and published in 2000. It's set in a distant solar system where three factions - the Earth Expeditionary Fleet, the Martian Artefacts Corporation, and an artificial intelligence known as Nero - battle for control of exotic planets and resources.
As a player, you take command of one of these factions. Gameplay involves balancing economic development of your colonies and natural resources, researching technologies to improve your ships and weapons, diplomacy with other factions, and combat between massive space armadas. The single player campaign is diverse and challenging with scenarios ranging from stealth missions to large-scale planetary invasions.
While the in-game graphics are quite dated at this point, the scope of the gameplay and battles still hold up well. With diverse planets to colonize, a flexible technology tree for your faction, intense tactical space battles, and a non-linear campaign, Haegemonia offers a strategic depth that rivals more modern space RTS titles.
Since its initial release, Haegemonia has built up a cult following for its immersive science fiction universe and emphasis on space combat and galactic domination over resources and territory. If you enjoy classic RTS gameplay fused with space opera and tactical starship battles, Haegemonia Legions of Iron is still well worth checking out.
