A critically acclaimed space-based real-time strategy game franchise focusing on ship combat and strategy, featuring innovative 3D graphics and engaging storyline.
Homeworld is a groundbreaking real-time strategy (RTS) video game series developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment. The first Homeworld game was released in 1999 to critical acclaim for its innovative full 3D graphics, detailed ship designs, epic storyline, and complex gameplay focused on large-scale ship combat tactics.
The games take place in a science fiction universe where a civilization called the Kushan discover an ancient starship that helps them escape their dying planet. This kicks off an epic journey across the stars back to their ancient homeworld called Hiigara. The player guides the Kushan fleet across many star systems, harvesting resources, constructing powerful warships, and battling enemies like the Taiidan Empire.
A key aspect that set Homeworld apart was its full 3D graphics that allowed movement and attacks to occur on the x, y, and z axis. Most RTS games at the time were restricted to 2D aerial views. Players directly control three-dimensional vessels from a cinematic camera view, immersing them into the action, almost like piloting a spaceship. The games also featured a compelling storyline with high quality cinematic cutscenes.
Homeworld received widespread critical praise upon release in 1999 for its beautiful visuals, innovations in 3D gameplay, attention to physics and scale, and excellent use of audio to increase immersion. It is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential RTS games of all time. A sequel called Homeworld 2 was released in 2003 to similarly positive reviews. After many years, Gearbox Software acquired the IP rights and released Homeworld Remastered Collection in 2015 with upgraded graphics and features.
