What is Meetup?
Meetup is an online platform launched in 2002 to help people foster local communities and bring them together around shared interests and causes. Its mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. The platform makes it easy for users to find and join groups focused on topics ranging from parenting to entrepreneurship to hiking.
Users can create groups centered around a particular neighborhood, interest, cause or idea. As a group organizer, they can then publicize meetups and events to the group members through the Meetup platform. Meetup handles event RSVPs and messaging among group members. There are currently over 45 million users signed up for over 522,000 groups worldwide covering 182,000+ meetups every month.
In addition to in-person meetings and events, Meetup also facilitates virtual events and hybrid events combining virtual and in-person participation. This flexibility increased the platform's utility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other key features include discussion boards for groups, member profiles, group member tools like photo sharing and chat, and integration with other apps like Mailchimp and Eventbrite.
