What is MiracleCast?
MiracleCast is an open-source implementation of the Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi Display specification. It allows users to wirelessly display and control the screen from laptops and mobile devices like smartphones and tablets on supported receiving devices like smart TVs, set-top boxes, and streaming sticks.
It works by establishing a peer-to-peer connection between the sending device (laptop, phone) and receiving device (TV, projector) using Wi-Fi Direct, without needing a wireless router. This allows easy streaming of videos, photos, presentations and more to a bigger screen.
Some key features of MiracleCast include:
- Support for full HD 1080p video streaming with low latency
- Touch controls allowing control of the receiving device from the sending device
- Secure encryption of the wireless connection
- Compatibility with major Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora
- Active ongoing development sponsored by Intel and other contributors
Overall, MiracleCast provides an easy and standardized way of wirelessly displaying device screens for both consumer media streaming and business/classroom presentation use cases. With its basis in an open standard and open-source implementation, it promises wider interoperability than previous proprietary solutions like Intel's WiDi.
